Síkinos

Sikinos is a typical island of the Cyclades, with terraces, low stone fences and dense chapels that dot a landscape bathed by the wonderful green and blue waters of the Aegean Sea.

The picturesque port of the island with whitewashed houses is Aloprónia and only 3.5 km away you can visit the capital of the island, Hóra, a town that includes two neighborhoods, the oldest Kástro and the most recent Horió. This is the starting point for the trails that cross the entire island. Visit the monastery of the Zoodochos Pighi fortress and enjoy a stunning sunset from there. The Byzantine monastery of Episkopi and the Ayia Marina chapel is definitely worth visiting, as they also offer a beautiful view from their location at the top of the hill.

Thyme honey, local dairy products, and capers are some of the delicacies your palate should treat.

The houses in Sikinos are among the best examples of classical Cycladic architecture. The Pantanassas Timios Stavros Church stands to the east of the cobbled square. It was erected in 1787 and has a gold-plated wooden temple and prominent post-Byzantine icons of the Cretan school.

In the alleys of Chora

The iconic three windmills can be seen at the highest point of the Chora. Dare to climb and you will be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the island. The Folklore Museum, housed in an olive oil press owned by the Margetis family, houses exhibits, relics, and materials that shed light on the island's history. The Byzantine Collection, located in Chora's central square, houses exhibits of the island's most notable icons. These icons are mainly composed of post-Byzantine Cretan icons, as well as images from Sikinos' Byzantine and post-Byzantine seasons. These icons are only displayed during the summer and are transported to the church of Panagia Pantanassa, the most famous church on the island, during the winter.

Religion & culture

Zoodochos Pigi Monastery is built on the edge of a cliff and resembles a castle, with a breathtaking view of the sea and the sunset. The monastery is fortified with walls since the neighbors took refuge here in case of assault. You can also visit the Byzantine churches of Agios Georgios (St. George). Aghia Anna, Aghios Vassilios and Eisodia tis Theotokou are three other beautiful churches (the Presentation of the Virgin Mary). The Episkopi Monastery complex, located 4 kilometers to the southwest, is a historic Byzantine monastery built on a Roman tomb, inside the church are beautiful frescoes.

Mavri Spilia (Black Cave), the largest cave on the island and one of the largest in the Cyclades, can be reached by boat from Chrissopigi Monastery.
