Amorgos

Amorgos is one of the most impressive islands in the Cyclades. With blue waters, wild beaches, magnificent caves, ideal places for scuba diving, scenic bays and ancient trails that lead through its rocky and steep terrain.

Amorgos retains its traditional color and the hospitality of the locals welcome the visitor with a smile and make you feel at home! The town of Amorgos (Chora) with its labyrinthine streets is built in the center of the island and is surrounded by rocky hills with breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.

Here you can admire an impressive setting with scenic paintings, traditional Cycladic houses, bougainvillea in its courtyards and whitewashed small alleys. In the taverns scattered around the streets of Chora, you can enjoy local specialties accompanied by a raki «psimeni» shot.

Katapola is the main port of the island that connects Amorgos with the rest of the islands and the peninsula. Egiali, the second port of Amorgos, is a lively town and very popular with young people since in Egiali you can find the only camping on the island. Along its promenade, there are several cafes, bars and restaurants.

Le Grand Bleu

Amorgos is one of the most impressive islands in the Cyclades. It has picturesque bays, underwater caves, ideal places fo scuba diving, and golden beaches that can be reached on foot or by boat. Some of these are the beach of Agia Anna where part of the movie “The Big Blue” was filmed, Mouros, Maltezi, Kalotaritissa and Bay of Liveros where the shipwreck of the ship “The Olympia” was found.

Perched on a mountain behind Egiali there are three picturesque villages: TholariaLagkada and Potamos, the best time to visit them is at sunset to enjoy a magical sunset.

Monastery Of The Virgin Mary (Panagia) Hozoviotissa

The 9th-century Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa is the main attraction of the island, it is a spiritual refuge and one of the most important ecclesiastical monuments in Greece. It is built on the highest point of a steep rock of Profitis Elias Mountain, 300 meters above the Aegean Sea and is visible only from the sea. The monastery is an example of human triumph over nature, a wonder that will leave you amazed.

According to tradition, the cause of its foundation was the discovery of an icon of the Virgin Mary by Palestinian monks in the town Josifa near Jerico. The monks came to Amorgos fleeing the persecutions of Christians in the Holy Land in the ninth century. The Monastery was restored in the 10th century by the Byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus.

The interior of the monastery is like a labyrinth. It has eight floors communicated by narrow stairs, dug in the rock. The monks’ cells are carved into the rock to form a unique example of traditional architecture. In the monastery are exhibited important legacies such as a manuscript gospel, vestments and ecclesiastical utensils dating from the tenth century.

The views from the highest balcony of the Monastery will leave you breathless!

Hiking enthusiasts that are in Amorgos in Easter can follow the procession of the icon of the Virgin from the monastery to the town of Egiali and back to the Monastery. It’s a shocking six-hour trip through the ancient trails of the island, a hymn to nature and faith.
