Koufonisia

Koufonisia is a small group of two islets, east of Naxos and west of Amorgos; These are Pano Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi, and are separated by a narrow 200 meters in length. Both were named Koufonisia (that is to say, hollow islands) because of the enormous existing cavities that surely the pirates who saw them in the distance thought that the islands had holes. At a short distance, you will see that the island of Keros is deserted, as it has been designated as an archaeological site under protection, as well as the major art discoveries of the Cycladic Islands that have been discovered.

When you arrive, the white windmill that is situated at the entrance of the harbor will welcome you. Chora is more upstream: a typical village of the Cyclades, with whitewashed houses and picturesque alleys. In the center, you will see the church of Agios Georgios, patron of the island. You can rent a bicycle and walk the island along the waterfront. Do not hesitate to visit the interior area and walk along the paths from Chora to Pano Meria.

Their islanders simply like a good party. On April 23 (the holiday of Agios Georgios) takes place one of the great events, where the icon of the saint is escorted and transported around by fishing boats that sail along the coast. The «fisherman’s party» takes place on June 24, and all the guests are offered the delicious kakavia soup. On August 15 the locals sail to Kato Koufonisi to celebrate the feast in honor of Panagia (the Virgin Mary).

Two islands...

Of the two islets, Pano Koufonisi is the only village. Here you will find the best beaches are in Loutro, Parianos, Foinikas, Fanos, Italida, and Pori where you can practice windsurfing as well. In Kato Koufonisi, you will see the sandy and solitary sandy beaches in Panagia, Detis, and Nero. You can also tour the island by boat and admire the sea caves, as well as the nearby islets of Glaronisi, Prasoura, Voulgari, Tsouloufi, Lazaros and Megali Plaka; All of them have been designated as areas of great natural beauty.

Koufonisia is the ideal destination for those looking to relax on their holidays and look for protected beaches of golden sand, small natural swimming pools with turquoise waters, fiestas and fresh sea seafood.
