Kefalonia

Kefalonia is one of the most attractive places due to its amazing beaches, rich cultural heritage, beautiful landscapes, lush green mountains and friendly and welcoming people.

Between Zakynthos (Zante) and Lefkada, Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Sea. Kefalonia was part of the Achaia province during the Byzantine period and was invaded by Normans, Franks, Venetians and Turks over the years.

On May 21, 1864, Kefalonia and the rest of the Ionian Islands joined Greece. During World War II, the city's inhabitants fought a brave fight against Italian and German soldiers. This resistance is shown in the film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz and shot on the island.

Picturesque Villages

Stavros, the second largest village on the island, is a charming place, with kafenia (cafés) around a small square dominated by a somewhat ferocious monument to Odysseus. The Homeric site of Stavrss is located on the side of the Pelikata hill, where traces of roads, walls and other constructions have been identified as the location of Odysseus's citadel.

From Stavros, a picturesque mountain road travels 5 kilometers southeast to Anogi. A free-standing Venetian bell tower stands in the center of the village. On the eve of the Assumption of the Virgin, August 14, don't miss the annual "panigiri".

The Katavothres caves inside the seawater and reappears after 14 days in Karavomylo in the area of Sami that is at the other end of the island. Near Katavothres, at the end of the Lassi peninsula is the Agioi Anargiroi Lighthouse from where the sunset is beautiful.

Very interesting are also the Museum of History and Folk Art and the Enoteca Vinariés where wines and other local products are displayed.

The Leivatho area is 7 km south of Argostoli and contains numerous small villages with neoclassical buildings, beautiful squares and sea views such as Kaligata, Svoronata, Metaxata, Domata and Kourkoumelata, as well as beautiful sandy beaches such as Lourdas, Paradisi, Sisia. . , Katsonas, Nisi, Lefka, Koroni, Minia, Ammes. In the Leivatho region, you can also see the 1587 Milapidias Monastery and the 13th-century Venetian fortification of Agios Georgios.

Valsamata, 11 kilometers south of Argostoli, is known for the native type of Robola vines produced in the region, as well as the island's Agios Gerasimos Monastery and Ainos National Park.
