A one-of-a-kind 12-day group trip in which we will visit several cities in Albania and Northern Greece.
Our journey will begin in Tirana (Tiranë), Albania’s capital, which will serve as an introduction to the country’s lifestyle and history. We will travel to Shkrodër, where we will ascend to the castle of Rozafa, and to Durres, a coastal city with an amphitheater and mosaics.
We will visit the archaeological sites of Apollonia, which was inhabited by Illyrians, Greeks, and Ottomans, as well as Butrint. We will visit Berat, the so-called «city of a thousand windows» which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as other cities such as Vlorë, Sarandë, and Gjirokastër with its castle, a striking bazaar, and an Ottoman-style old town.
On our journey through northern Greece, we will stop at the Oracle of Dodoni, which houses Zeus’ oracular shrine, the second most important in Greece.
We’ll also go to Pella and Vergina, two important Macedonian Empire cities. Pella is the birthplace of King Philip and his son Alexander the Great, and Vergina is home to one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites. So-called «royal tombs», including King Philip’s, have been discovered in this region.
At the end of the tour, we will visit Amphipolis, an archaeological site where we will see the famous Lion of Amphipolis from Hellenistic times. We will then tour Thessaloniki, including the church of Saint Demetrius, the archaeological museum, and the rotunda.
