Spinalonga is an arid and barren rocky islet with an area of 8.5 hectares located at the mouth of the natural harbor of Elounda. The island forms a natural “defense mechanism” for Elounda port. In 1579 the Venetians built a mighty fortress here on the ruins of an ancient acropolis.
Spinalonga is also known as the island of the lepers as it is where the lepers of Crete and all Greece were put quarantine from 1905 to 1957.
Ierapetra is the southernmost city in Europe, off the coast of Africa. Its magnificent natural beauty make it ideal to rest and enjoy the sea and the mountains.
The beaches of Ierapetra are dreamy, Livadakia is one of the best organized beaches in the area when Apovathra is the best for water sports. The most isolated are Livadi and Peristera.
The most important attraction of Ierapetra is Gaidouronissi or Chryssi. A small island with crystal clear waters and white sand about an hour by boat from Ierapetra.
